“Will AI overcome natural intelligence?” A Deep Dive into the Future of Human and AI

The last few decades have changed the face of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as we define and understand it. This leaves one question abuzz in many people’s minds: Will Artificial Intelligence someday be more advanced than the capability of natural intelligence? This question is bold enough to be asked in a much persuaded world where machines are doing anything that a human mind can infer. From playing complex chess and Go matches to diagnosing patients, it has been made clear that there are certain activities that AI can accomplish better than human beings. Yet, the case for intelligence in the whole as it encompasses social interaction is still far from settled.

To begin with, there are different definitions of artificial intelligence and natural intelligence and speech-processing technology, then goes to the developments of Ai technology, and finally tackles the beliefs, ethics, and practical issues concerning the question, could AI ever come to challenge human intelligence. Given this background we will try to tackle the following questions – Can artificial intelligence, as it has advanced today, completely premier over natural intelligence or are there specific jobs that only human beings are capable of performing?

Understanding Artificial Intelligence vs. Natural Intelligence:

Before diving into whether AI can surpass natural intelligence, it’s important to clarify what we mean by these two forms of intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence:-

Artificial Intelligence deals with systems and processes synonymous with human cognitive development especially in learning, reasoning, and self-correcting. To learn is to acquire with comprehension what one has acquired and geared for utilization, reasoning entails using the acquired knowledge to make conclusions whereas self-correction means improving the process of doing anything in this case which what was being done. Depending on the research objectives, there are mainly two classes in which AI can be found:

-Narrow AI: Also known as weak artificial intelligence, this type is designed to carry out a specific and narrow task such as playing chess or facial recognition. Most of the current AI applications would fall under this category.
-General AI: Also known as strong AI, this term refers to the fact that the particular system is capable thinking and learning and using artificial intelligence to solve a wide range of problems as any other person would.

Natural Intelligence:-

Natural intelligence could be described as the mental capacity which one is born with naturally, as in other animals. It explains not only information processing but awareness, self consciousness, imagination, feelings, and inner voice. It is this natural phenomenon which explains how one can acquire skills arising from different environments, inferring new situations and formulating ideas and solutions to puzzles, which today’s machines cannot do.

Similar to a human being age, artificial intelligence may have developed rapidly in a certain area but it still falls short of the overall span of integrated cognitive functions found in persons. However, with the progress of artificial intelligence, will there come a point where it can equal or even surpass the open intelligence?

The Evolution of Artificial Intelligence: What can be accomplished now?

The expansion of AI has been impressive, to put it mildly. With the development of machine learning, neural networks, and data processing, AI systems have managed to exceed humans in particular areas such as:

Engaging in high-level strategical play: In 2016, the world of competitive Go turned upside down with the victory of Google’s AI program called AlphaGo over the reigning champion of that game. Playing Go is regarded as one of the most elaborated and difficult strategy games to master, and that victory implied unprecedented machine learning capabilities of conquering even such advanced tasks and achieving even more than any person can do.
Medical diagnostics: Now AI systems are capable of diagnosing diseases such as cancer with better accuracy than most human doctors by analyzing a lot of data and recognizing trends that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Speech comprehension: The natural language processing systems such as GPT4 have been able to produce proper text, respond to prompts and hold conversations which makes it possible to say that these systems understand the language rather well.

Though these are often regarded as specialized ai systems, they are a narrow progression of what they can be at the moment. A low chess ai may beat humans and even other computer chess programs. However, it will be very hard to turn such chess ai into one that can operate a car or paint pictures. This is where the chasm between narrow artificial intelligence and adult artificial intelligence lies.

Could AI Surpass Natural Intelligence?

The potential for artificial intelligence to develop further than human capability is particularly one which encourages the discourse on the ultimate milestone of AGI. AGI is that level of Artificial intelligence whereby it would be able to grasp and master any cognitive activity that a human being is capable of performing and therefore it opens up the opportunity of AIs equipping or totally outperforming human beings in almost all aspects.

Many reasons lead to the conviction that AGI is capable of achieving superior intelligence to the present day humanity.

1. The increase in computing power is in exponential scale-
One of the reasons contributing to AI pushing most of its boundaries is due to the growing amount of kernel computing power. In that as computer technology becomes better and faster, more sophisticated AI algorithms take in more data and run more complicated models. Because of all these, over the short period expectations would have enunciated AI doing more smarter things than it has ever achieved. Others assume such beliefs in excessive resource development are why economies are broken and that such deep structural social changes will mark the onset of AGI.

2. Dimension of the System allows for Continuous Learning and Improvement-
The already existing ai systems have the ability to systemically learn and grow better over a certain period of time by looking at data and making forecasts on that data. In contrast to this, computer systems do not suffer from biological learning limits as they are able to process large volumes nearly instantly, systematic learning capabilities are eventually able to surpass all human’s capabilities to process and make use of the available information.

3. Cognitive Computing Tasks Automation-
The automation of various cognitive tasks like data processing, pattern detection or recognition, and even decision-making is already within the domain of AI. With the improvement of such skills, AI could further relieve humans of more complex and higher order intellectual chores. For instance, there are tasks that are restricted to human operated AI because of the need for creativity or factor consideration such as in scientific or artistic works.

4. The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Discovery Scientific-
In the area of scientific discovery, AI has certain abilities that could reach beyond what human intelligence is able to achieve. In such domains as drug design and development, and research in different fields such as physics and chemistry, artificially intelligent agents, capable of operating on the data level beyond the possibilities of a single human researcher are used. HBIs able to make experiments, test hypotheses, run simulations, and predict, will make such things possible, that humans could only dream of, and realize in few decades.

5. The Advancements in Conscious AI-
The growing field of AI has brought in many arguments and controversies over the years, the most heated of which is the development of conscious AI systems. This is an AI system that performs tasks like human beings but also possesses self-awareness, emotions and consciousness. Though this concept is everywhere but technically in the shops and houses of science fiction, there are those who think that in the event AIs do have a consciousness, they will be quite emotional, possess a lot of creativity and in the even more illogical way, be more ‘morally superior’ than actual people.

The Difficulties and Constraints of using AI:

Although it is an exciting notion to consider machines outperforming human abilities, there are various challenges and constraints that come with AI. These challenges indicate that in the foreseeable future, there will be no driving force that will enable AI to conquer all aspects of human creativity and intelligence.

1. Absence of General Intelligence-
As stated previously, the majority of AI applications available today are examples of “narrow AI”, meaning it is aimed at doing one activity exceptionally well. AGI is still a far off dream as it would mean for an AI, learning as well as applying different sets of information for different tasks. Current AI system does not have that kind of scope and utility which human possess.

2. Absence of Emotional Intelligence and Intuition-
It isn’t also correct to think that human intelligence is determined by rationality and the processing of given information only. Decision making and being creative involves emotions, feelings, intuition as well as empathy. There are aspects of emotional appreciation which an AI can fake like sentiment analysis and NLP; however there is bound to lack depth and experience that human beings have. Emotional comprehension or intelligence is a major part of every human society or rather human relation; It is a major aspect of every relations, therefore, without such an ability, it is highly probable that AI would not be able to comprehend, let alone construct, human interaction.

3. Ethics and Values Notions-
The above does is meant to support this point which emphasizes that mankind’s intelligence is not in any way separable from ethical and values considerations engendered by culture, society and life history. While it could be possible to program AI to operate according to acceptable ethics, it would be very much limited given that the machine will not have an awareness of the intrinsic division of what is right from what is wrong as those of us who are human have. Humanity faces a great challenge or impossibility in building artificial systems that replicate the thinking that resolves or decides moral conflicts or dilemmas especially in instanced case conflicts.

4. The Issue of Black Box Models-
One of the main problems in AI is the black box problem; the difficulty in understanding how an AI reaches its conclusion. Such opacity raises issues of trust and responsibility, especially in sensitive fields like health care, law and finance. In contrast to machines, human intelligence tends to be more clear and more easy to understand.

5. Reliance on Information-
The training of AI systems is adversely affected by the excessive reliance on a heavy volume of information. This helps the AI system realize its full potential by allowing the analysis of data within the shortest time possible but also restrains the operation of the AI system in environments with little or no relevant information. In contrast, the human mind can work effectively even under conditions of inadequacy of information and can make judgment calls from past experiences, gut feelings, and imagination.

The relationship between AI and natural intelligence going into the future: Is it Synergistic?

Instead of considering the often-cited question regarding if robots will one day be superior to human beings, it is more appropriate to think about how best can human and artificial intelligence augment each other. For instance, it is true that machines are best suited for analyzing vast volumes of information, identifying trends, and performing repetitive tasks whereas human beings are endowed with the ability to imagine, relate to people, and make moral judgments.

1. Enhancement of Intelligence-
Augmented intelligence is a strategy that builds on the strengths of artificial intelligence and human beings. A rather than preventing them from taking actions, artificial intelligence has the potential to facilitate making decisions, increase efficiency, and provide information that cannot easily be discovered by humans working on their own. For instance, it is easier for a machine to assist a medical doctor in diagnosing a patient correctly where the machine itself does not interact with the patient or make a diagnosis but rather supplements the doctor’s duties.

2. Coexistence of Humans with AI-
With the growth of Artificial Intelligence capabilities over time, perhaps the most prominent structural change will be seen in relations between humans and machines – A.I. Much of the mechanistic part, data crunching, will be done by A.I. and the contextual, crafty and insight driven aspects will be the work of people. This form of collaboration which makes the best of A.I and humans’ intelligence is likely going to result in revolutions in the industries such as healthcare and creative practices.

Final thoughts:

The overriding statement of whether or not artificial intelligence exceeds human intelligence is complex and has many sides to it. While the computer has worn out human capabilities in certain specified undertakings, it is still inferior to the vast and advanced intelligence possessed by man. Aspects such as emotional intelligence, ethics and creativity are variables that artificial intelligence does not yet possess.

The scope of artificial intelligence may not be focused on outmatching human intelligence, instead it will integrate with it. There will be rainbow colors of novelty and inventions when artificial intelligence is fused with creativity, emotions and ethics found in people. Artificial intelligence can be considered a tool, which is a strong one, but the way it influences the world is determined by a person.
